KNOW THE DIFFERENCE

The first step to preventing an emergency is to know the difference between an emergency and a non-emergency.

PROBLEM: WET FLOOR OR PUDDLE

A wet floor is an emergency if you cannot locate the cause and the problem is continuing to escalate. It may be a sign of a burst pipe inside the wall or floor.

A wet floor is not an emergency is you can find the source of the problem. When you find the source, turn the main water supply off and wait for the water to dry up. Call a plumber and schedule a non-emergency visit to repair the problem later.

PROBLEM: LEAKY WATER HEATER

A leaking water heater is an emergency if the water heater pressure is too high, or the temperature is reaching critical levels, or if the relief valve is broken. It is also an emergency if you smell gas. These are all signs that the water heater is at risk to explode.

A leaking water heater is not an emergency if the above examples are not present. Simply turn the power off to the water heater and close the water supply valve. Schedule a later appointment with the plumber.

PROBLEM: CLOGGED PLUMBING

Clogged pipes are an emergency if multiple fixtures are backed up and sewage is overflowing. This may be a sign of damage or blockage in your main sewer line. Sewage overflowing is a health and safety hazard constituting an extreme emergency.

Clogged plumbing is not an emergency if the water is draining slowly but not overflowing. Consider making an appointment with a plumber for later and avoid using the clogging fixtures until the plumber examines them.

SO, IT IS AN EMERGENCY…

If you are experiencing a true plumbing emergency, you should know how to stop the flow of water until a plumber can arrive to fix the problem.
