Benefits of Geothermal Technology

A TECHNOLOGY THAT HAS SHOWN PERFORMANCE FOR MANY YEARS!

Usually, when it rains, the rain water drains down into the rivers and streams. These rivers and streams lead into the ocean, where all water normally returns. Some rain gets absorbed into the earth’s surface and is kept underground until it dries up. However, there is a way to use that water to our benefit; it can be used to heat and cool our homes. This is called geothermal heating and air conditioning.

WHEN WAS GEOTHERMAL ENERGY FOUNDED?

No one knows the exact date of when geothermal energy was founded. The first known historical recording was in 1807, when European settlers started moving out west. They started gravitating toward these springs of warmth and comfort. The first settler to migrate towards the Yellowstone area was John Colter. Due to his findings, the location he had first visited is now named Colter’s Hell. In the same year of the finding if Colter’s Hell, the settlers found the city of Hot Springs, Arkansas. The first known commercial use of anyone using geothermal energy for profit was in 1830 when a man named Asa Thompson started to charge people one dollar for the use of three spring-fed baths in wooden tubs.

WHAT GEOTHERMAL ENERGY IS USED FOR IN FARMING

There are many uses of geothermal energy in today’s world. Geothermal energy is not just used for cooling and heating homes; it can be used on farms, as well. Geothermal energy can be used to keep greenhouses warm throughout all the seasons.

Farmers have also been known to use geothermal heating to grow their vegetables in the winter time when it’s in the off season. Geothermal heating is also used on fish farms to keep fishtanks warm and helps spur the growth of the sea creatures and fish that are being farmed.

USES OF GEOTHERMAL ENERGY IN INDUSTRIES

Geothermal energy is used in industries in many of the same ways it is used in farming. Geothermal heating is used to dry edible goods such as vegetables and fruit. They also use it in other consumer goods such as drying wood and wool and extracting gold and silver ore.

GEOTHERMAL ENERGY IN INFRASTRUCTURE & ELECTRICITY

Geothermal energy is used to heat sidewalks and roads in order to keep them from freezing during the winter. The Netherlands would be a good example, as they just recently started using geothermal energy for heating the bike lanes to help improve the safety of people riding bicycles and motorcycles in the winter. Geothermal energy is used in electricity to help supply power by producing steam to turn turbines. This form of generating electricity is very enviromentally friendly.
