As it gets colder this fall, eventually, you will turn on the heat in your home. There are a number of things you should do before you switch on your furnace though. Make sure your home is fall ready with the following tips.
CHECK YOUR FILTERS
Your filters keep your HVAC system running cleanly and smoothly. Clean filters will help with allergies, reduce the dust in your home, and prolong the life of your HVAC unit.
Try to change your filters every few months. The start of each new season is an easy time to remember. On your way home from the pumpkin patch, stop by the storm and pick up some new filters. If changing your filters is a little expensive, remember to clean them at the very least. Vacuuming the dust out of the filter works temporarily too.
CLEAR AWAY LEAVES
Before starting your furnace, make sure to clear away any fallen leaves or other debris from around the unit. Leaves can restrict airflow, which can harm your unit over time.
For peak performance, keep your HVAC unit clean and covered. Hurricanes can be especially damaging to HVAC units. Keeping your HVAC unit covered will help protect it from storms and the changing seasons.
PROGRAM YOUR THERMOSTAT
Fall is known for rapidly changing temperatures. It can be hard to keep up with, especially when night time can be much cooler than daytime temperatures. Keep up with the temperature, while keeping your utility bills low with a programmable thermostat. Installing a programmable thermostat, or using the program settings, will keep your home comfortable all day.
