What are the Different Types of Heat Pumps?

Most people think heat pumps provide heat. True. They do. However, not many people know that they also provide cooling. Heat pumps are actually efficient because they provide both heating and cooling. The machine uses a small amount of energy to propel heat from one location to another. It usually obtains heat from the ground or from the air. Likewise, they also work the same when cooling. If you are familiar with how air conditioners work, then you know how heat pumps work too.

HEAT PUMP VS. HVAC SYSTEM

Compared to an HVAC system, a heat pump is easier to install. An HVAC system, on the other hand, needs both heating and cooling system to be installed so it may need some time to do it.

Heat pumps transfer heat whereas HVAC systems need to burn fuel in order to produce heat. Between the two, the former is more energy efficient. Sine heat pumps do not need fuel they are considered more environment-friendly than furnaces running on gas. They can provide heating and cooling not only on homes but can also heat a pool.

However, heat pumps are more suitable for moderate climates only. If you are living where cold or hot weathers are extreme, it is best to install an HVAC system instead.

AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMPS

Air source heat pumps take heat from the air outside, pumps it inside the home using liquid refrigerant coils, and then out into the air ducts of your home or office. Sometimes, air source heat pumps ae also called as air-air heat pump. This is because it takes outside air and brings it inside through air ducts.

As to its cooling mechanism, the reversing valve absorbs the heat inside the home and throws it outside, just the complete opposite of how a heat pump warms the air inside the home. During this time, it follows the same mechanism an air conditioner does. Once warm air is released, the refrigerant cools down, sucks warm air again and the whole process is repeated.

MINI SPLIT HEAT PUMP

Mini split heat pumps are for those homes who do not have air ducts. This type is best for those retrofitting their home with a heat pump system. It only requires a small conduit at 3 inches to come through the wall. The system is composed of an outdoor unit connected to several units indoor. The indoor units, on the other hand, connect to a space heater or water heat. The indoor units can be installed in different parts of the house or building such as the ceiling, wall or floor.

 REVERSE CYCLE CHILLER HEAT PUMP

Also known as, RCC, the reverse cycle chiller heat pump uses water instead of air to provide heat to a home or building. An RCC heat pump either cools or heats the water inside an insulated tank. Cold or hot air is then distributed through a coil system and a fan that brings the air to the air ducts and out to your home. An RCC can also heat the floor through hot water. So you feel more comfortable in bare feet even if it is cold outside.

COLD CLIMATE HEAT PUMP

The cold climate heat pump is a new type of unit which is more energy efficient than the rest. This is because it has the capacity to determine intelligently the amount of energy needed to raise or lower the temperature. The cold climate heat pump is appropriate for those living in areas with extreme weather conditions. It can even work efficiently in temperatures below zero.
