Protecting Your Air Conditioning Unit

Installing an air conditioning unit for your home is an investment that can provide years of use. Unfortunately, AC units have components, like copper piping, that can lure thieves. Here are some tips that can help you protect your air conditioning unit while still allowing it to function properly.

INSTALL A SECURITY CAGE

A security cage surrounds your AC unit completely with locked protection, causing this to be the most effective means of crime prevention for your air conditioner. Security cages can be purchased pre-made or designed according to your specifications by metalworkers. It is important to keep in mind, however, that the security cage needs to allow an unrestricted flow of air to the AC unit.

ADD LIGHTS AROUND AC UNIT

Well-lit areas are avoided by thieves who prefer to work in areas where they are less likely to be observed. Because of this, installing lights around your AC unit can deter crime. To keep the area around your air conditioning unit lit as needed, adding motion detector lights to your home’s outdoor lighting can provide protection throughout the night, even when your main exterior lights are turned off.

INSTALL SECURITY CAMERAS

Security cameras installed outside a home are an effective deterrent to crime, including the theft of AC units. When installing your security cameras, make sure they are placed high enough off the ground to keep them out of reach and their camera angle includes the area around your AC unit.

ADD REFRIGERANT LEAK ALARM TO AC UNIT

Thieves cannot remove a condenser unit without cutting the refrigerant lines, causing the refrigerant to discharge from the system. Adding a refrigerant leak alarm to your unit sets off an audible alarm, increasing the likelihood of thieves abandoning their plans. Some refrigerant leak alarms have the capacity to send the alarm notice to your phone or can be connected to a home’s main alarm system. Unfortunately with a refrigerant leak alarm, thieves will have caused some damage to the system by cutting the refrigerant lines, but the damage can be repaired for a couple of hundred dollars versus thousands of dollars for a unit replacement.

The disconnect box of an air conditioner unit allows you to disconnect the power to the unit so it can be serviced safely. Smarter thieves will want to cut the power as well to prevent any shocks when they try to steal an AC unit or its parts. Adding a locking mechanism to your AC unit’s disconnect box can help discourage thieves from beginning their work.
