THE BASICS OF RADIANT HEATING
Radiant heating is a type of heat exchange that uses hot water or steam to carry heat throughout a building. A furnace heats the water and the fluid or steam is circulated through pipes. The most common type of radiant heating system uses standing radiators to deliver heat to a room, but an underfloor system, another popular option, transfers heat to pipes installed under the flooring. The heated water or steam in the pipes emits heat to warm a room.
Because radiant heating heats a room from the floor up, it is an efficient heating option. It provides conductive heat through the radiator or floor pipes and infrared radiation that keeps people warm but not the air. Unlike forced air, the pipes that comprise a radiant heating system cannot also be used to transfer cool air, so any house with a radiant heating system will also need an independent air conditioning plan.
